Book Study Classes
Healthy Sexuality/Intimacy – Part I
Using Sexual Anorexia by Patrick Carnes as the basis for study, Part I covers chapters 1-5 of this book.
A pathological loss of “appetite” for romantic or sexual interaction, sexual anorexia is often the result of a fear of intimacy to the point that the person has severe anxiety surrounding sexual activity and the emotional aspects involved with it (i.e., an intimate relationship). This severe aversion to sexual contact and the obsessive avoidance of sex also includes feeling self-loathing after sex, have irrational fears about sexually transmitted diseases, engaging in self-destructive behaviors to avoid sex, or have episodes of promiscuous behavior followed by periods of extreme deprivation. The condition may also be described as Inhibited sexual desire, sexual avoidance, or sexual aversion.
Sexual anorexia can also be described as a compulsive avoidance of giving or receiving social, sexual, or emotional nourishment. Similar to food anorexia, in which a person struggles to nourish themselves with food, people with sexual anorexia avoid intimacy and/or sexual contact.
In this 7 week class studying Part I, we will cover the fundamental concepts of Sexual Anorexia and its parallel disorder, sexual addiction/compulsivity, which often arise from a background of childhood sexual trauma, neglect, and other forms of abuse.
Each week you will be asked to answer 3-10 questions from your workbook in advance. Class time will be spent talking about each chapter in general and then reviewing these questions. Email us at info@sharingesh.com today to find out when the next cohort of the class begins. We are also available to work through this one-on-one. The required Sexual Anorexia book by Patrick Carnes which can be purchased at Amazon or your local bookstore.
Healthy Sexuality/Intimacy – Part II
Using Sexual Anorexia by Patrick Carnes as our text, Part II covers chapters 6-17 in the book.
Chapters 6-17 contain concrete tasks and plans for restoring nurturing and sensuality, building fulfilling relationships, exploring intimacy, and creating healthy sexuality. We will explore these tasks together each week in class and talk about how to put plans into place.
Parts I and II can be taken in any order although we recommend starting with Part I if you are new to the concepts covered in these classes.
